Move your Fascia!

Here is a interesting video entitled" Why yoga works" - http://vimeo.com/21878104
In the video Dr. Lipman speaks about how yoga is one of the few things that move and release fascia. Fascia is rarely brought up but people with chronic injuries and chronic pain benefit greatly from myofascial release. I tell you from experience! Fascia runs throught the body, over organs, muscles, tendons, etc and can stiffen or harden from injury or over time from repetition.
The practice of yoga is greatly beneficial for pain management and relief but the awareness to specific muscles and organs literally releases and detoxifies keeping your fascia in tip top shape!

Peace mantra for healing

Before I had a regular yoga practice I dealt with chronic pain, fibromyalgia, subluxating joints, IBS and chronic stress. It has many times over mended my heart and helped me mend others. It has helped me speak clearly and with ease in the most difficult of situations and allowed kindness instead of hate fill up my heart. It has given me hope.

I was practicing yoga as the death toll of the CT school shooting was being tallied yesterday. I had no idea at the time that as I flowed through asana, pranayama and meditation a terrible tragedy was amongst us.  My intuition at the beginning of practice was to dedicate with a mantra of daan shanti, meaning to give peace. I wanted to have the strength to send that into the world. I heard the news soon after I stepped off my mat and what horrific news it was. I know in such tragedy you will never recover without hope. To that I dearly hope the survivors are given the time and tools that yoga has given me to recover from horrific happenings. May they find, peace, hope and healing.

Om, Shanti, Shanti, Shantihi

Om Sahanaa Vavatu Sahanau Bhunaktu
Saha Veeryam Karavaavahai
Tejasvi Naavadheetamastu Maa Vidvishaavahai
Om Shantih Shantih Shantihi

Meaning: The literal meaning of this mantra is: "OM. Let all of us protect each other together, may all of us enjoy together, may all of us work together and let our study become radiant. Let there be no hatred between us, OM Peace, Peace, Peace"

Jackies yoga Seattle Bio

Discovering yoga at the age of 13 after a car accident catapulted Jackie into a life truly inspired by the teachings of yoga. Yoga not only helped Jackie overcome Fibromyalgia but has literally restored her body from years of rough equestrian sports with hypermobile joints, shoulder surgery...I could go on. Its obvious Jackie teaches directly from experience with her relatable approach and integrated creativity.  In her classes she conveys how to find ease in mind and body in challenging postures and transposes that into dealings of daily life. And with her infectious humor and wicked conviction of the effectiveness of living a life of yoga, you will leave her class with a light heart and a new found appreciation of the body. She is a true believer that every body is a yoga body and loves teaching all levels and all ages. Jackie has over  500 Yoga Alliance hours and has studied Hatha, Iyengar, Anusara, Vinyasa and always continues to expand.

Climbing yoga yoga climbing

I had alot of fun this weekend teaching a climber the basics of yoga. I just love how yoga compliments climbing and climbing compliments yoga. We really delved into how pranayama (breath control) can really help you hone in not only your mental focus, but can calm and re-energize in precarious body positioning.

Small group classes!

I am having so much fun with my small group classes! Its great to have the space and time to really breakdown basics and try new things!

If you have a friend or two or three that you would want to do yoga with, think about a small group yoga class with your friends or family. I have great winter rates right now making it cheaper than typical studio pricing with a semi private intimate setting. In home or for a few dollars more a studio location near you. Namaste!

Sankalpa seeds

The end of the year is approaching and I find myself evaluating where I have come and where I am going more. This is when I like to reiterate in my classes, intention.
Sankalpa, meaning purpose or will is often described as a seed of  intention. This seed is something for yourself to come back to, to nourish in meditation. To not only create a positive resolution of sorts but to actually change you, your way of thinking, acting, living. Manifesting your sankalpa in to action, allowing that seed of will flourish into the best you. Unlike typical resolutions  which can be a negative way of thinking, sankalpa is a way of changing your thinking altogether. Instead of saying I wish or I could, sankalpas would sound more like I am. Try a snakalpa seed, their fruit is delicious! Happy sankalpa planting everyone!

Moving on up

Winter is coming, a new year is approaching. Time to evaluate the past year, create new goals and take hold of what is most important. To stay on your path with strong will, mind and body I suggest more than ever keeping a schedule for yourself to yoga, meditate and gather your thoughts. Having regrets will only take you further from yourself so live your life fullest today and don't look back, always move forward. Namaste!

Don't forget to take time for yourself as turkey time approaches:)

Learning to listen, what your body has to say!

Ok I have had just about enough of those articles stating "caffeine is killing you", "gluten free or die", "kale for life"etcetcetc!
Do these articles have some good points, Sure they do! But if I listened to everyone of these articles and changed my life accordingly I would be STARVED and likely malnourished!

I have found, as have my students that the more you yoga the more in tune with your body you become. The more in tune you are the more specific your cravings become as well as when and how much to eat.
For example, when I have done several classes in one day I tend to crave potassium and calcium rich foods like coconut and kale chips YUM! And water! Which I generally tend to loath!
Your body tells you all the time what it needs, it just asks you give it some time and space in order to hear it.
Does this miraculous knowledge come instantly with a yoga class? No, although you do get to know your body better as soon as you step on that mat;) It takes time and you have to give yourself that time following through with a yoga regimen that works for you in order to see results you are looking for. Its not a diet its a way to life! We are constantly evolving creatures with constantly evolving needs, so why not continue to check in with yourself to see what it needs day to day.

So maybe check in for some yoga before turkey feasting this year, your body(and mind) will thank you! Namaste

Take care

Taking care of others is rewarding and beautiful but I realized at a young age that if you do not care for yourself first you can not give fully to others.
That is a lesson we all seem to need reminding of from time to time.

Yoga has always been my go to for getting back to myself, my mental clarity, my balance, my overall rejuvenation. Yoga at times felt over indulgent, I had things to do and people to care for! But it was always clear after my yoga practice that I and everyone around me would have suffered if I had not taken the time to return to my balance.
So as these busy holiday times are quickly approaching, don't forget to take time for yourself so you can keep on giving.

"A thousand candles can be lighted from the flame of one candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness can be spread without diminishing that of yourself."
Mahatma Gandhi
